LOWER EAST SIDE, Manhattan — A man rummaging through the garbage made a frightening discovery — a heart buried in a potted plant.

The grisly discovery was made Wednesday at the Riis Houses near the FDR Drive on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, police said.

The man was going through the trash when he pulled out a discarded potted plant, and removed the plant from its container to find a pink box under the dirt, police said.

Inside that box was a heart. It’s unclear whether the organ is human.

The medical examiner is investigating.
