Newark mother, boyfriend charged in death of 7-year-old boy

NEWARK, N.J. — A Newark mother and her live-in boyfriend have been charged in connection with the death of her 7-year-old son.

Khadejrah Rawls, 28, was charged with was charged with aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child.

Christopher Spearman, 29, was charged with endangering the welfare of a child.

Michael Moore Jr.,  was found unconscious in his family's apartment on North Munn Avenue in Newark Sunday afternoon.

He was rushed to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police investigating his death said it was "suspicious" based on the injuries sustained to Moore's body.

The autopsy results have not yet been finalized by the New Jersey Regional Medical Examiner's Office. The child's cause of death is still pending.

Neighbors and relatives who gathered in front of the home Sunday evening for a candlelight vigil called the boy "my Mike."

They said he was a sweet, quiet boy who often said there wasn't enough food for everyone in his home. He said he often went to bed hungry.

Four children younger than Moore were removed from the home along with three pit bull puppies. The children are in care of protective services.

The Essex County prosecutor's office would not confirm to PIX11 if the Division of Youth and Family Services had been investigating the family.
