Explosion goes off inside Queens apartment after police respond to call of ’emotionally disturbed person’

JAMAICA, Queens – An explosion inside a Queens apartment building Monday afternoon may have been caused by an individual police were called to investigate, officials said.

Police had been called to an apartment at 162-05 89 Ave. in Jamaica, Queens, about an “emotionally disturbed person,” authorities said. Shortly after officers arrived, an explosion occurred.

The person police were called to investigate was hurt and has been taken to a hospital in unknown condition, officials said.

Crews continued as of 4:20 p.m. to get the fire, deemed a second-alarm blaze, under control.
