NEWARK, N.J. — Two men were killed in a police involved shooting in Newark Friday morning, the Essex County Prosecutor’s office said.

The shooting happened around 6:30 a.m. at 7th Street and Abington Avenue, officials confirmed. A third individual, 17, was arrested.

He was attempting to flee on foot when police arrested him, said Newark Mayor Ras Baraka. Police recovered a gun at the scene.

James Stewart Jr., president of the Newark Fraternal Order of Police, tells NJ.com six officers involved in the shooting were being evaluated at a hospital.

Stewart says the officers were attempting to arrest three people suspected of being involved in multiple robberies around the city when the shooting occurred.

Stewarts says the suspects “were not interested in surrendering.” He says the officers “responded to the threat and Newark is a safer place today because of them.”
