Off-duty officer charged in wrong-way Suffolk County crash that killed 1

WEST ISLIP, N.Y. — An off-duty police officer was charged following a fatal wrong-way crash in Suffolk County Tuesday morning.

The crash happened around 4:30 a.m.,  in the westbound lanes between exits 39 and 40 in West Islip.

Police say Officer Robert Scheuerer, 24, was driving his Nissan Pathfinder eastbound in the westbound lanes when he crashed into a Ford van.

The van caught fire and the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver’s identity has not been released at this time.

Scheuerer, who is assigned to the Third Precinct in Suffolk County, was charged with reckless endangerment. He was suspended from duty without pay.

Scheuerer was taken to an area hospital where he is being treated for serious injuries. He will be arraigned at a later date.

Police say more charges may be forthcoming.
