QUEENS, N.Y. – A human skull and bones were found near Rikers Island, a source said Thursday.

Photos obtained exclusively by PIX11 News show evidence bags containing bones as well as a dark-colored shirt near the scene where the remains were spotted.

The grisly discovery was made along the rocky coast on the west side of the jail by Department of Correction staffers, a source said.

It’s not yet known to whom the remains belonged.

The medical examiner will determine the deceased’s identity and cause of death. The office said the remains are human.
