PATERSON, N.J. – A decomposed body was discovered inside an abandoned and boarded-up building that once was a police headquarters in New Jersey, authorities said Tuesday.

It was about 5:15 p.m. Monday when officers from the Paterson Police Department were called to 111 Washington St., the site of their department’s old headquarters.

The remains of an unidentified male were found during an inspection, police said. The medical examiner will determine the deceased’s cause of death.

It’s not clear how long the body had been inside the building, which was evacuated in 1979 after a fire destroyed the structure, police said. It’s been vacant and boarded-up ever since.

Police said no identifying information will be released at this time, but said they’ll likely need the public’s help to determine who this person was.

Anyone with information in the case is urged to call detectives Richard Martinez and Benny Ramos at 973-231-1120.
