LAURELTON, Queens — A Queens man was sentenced to 18 years to life in prison for killing a man and injuring a woman when he rammed his car into a crowd of people.
Kevin Weekes, 22, was convicted of murder, assault and reckless endangerment in April. He drove his car into the crowd after crashing a November 2014 baby shower.
“A vehicle can be just as deadly as a gun. In this case, the defendant pushed his way into a baby shower and then later, following a dispute with invited guests, got behind the wheel of his car and drove into a crowd of people,” said Queens District Attorney Richard Brown.
Weekes crashed a baby shower at Vision’s Banquet Hall on Nov. 8, 2014, prosecutors said. He left and got into his car after a fistfight with some shower guests. Weekes was stabbed in the abdomen at some point during the fight.
He drove away, but then made a U-turn and accelerated, prosecutors said. Weekes’ car jumped the sidewalk curb and plowed into the crowd.
Kevin Lewis, 20, was pinned under the car and dragged down the street until the car came to a stop half a block away, prosecutors said. Weekes also hit and seriously injured Antoinette Green, 21.
Weekes got out of his car and ran after crashing into the two victims, prosecutors said.
He was convicted in March after a three-week bench trial.
