38 displaced after fire rips through Newark homes

NEWARK, N.J. — At least twelve families were displaced from a fast-moving house fire in Newark Monday afternoon.

According to the Department of Public Safety, the fire broke out at 839 Mount Prospect Ave., around 12:50 p.m.

The fire grew to four alarms and spread to three other buildings.

Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control roughly an hour later.

Officials evacuated 12 families from the buildings.

The American Red Cross responded to the scene to assist 38 people in eight families.

Four families affected by the fire did not seek help from the Red Cross.

One fire captain is being evaluated for ankle pain.

The cause and origin of the fire is under investigation.
