Man threatens elderly couple with fork during LI home invasion: Police

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. — Police are searching for a man they say broke into an elderly couple's East Meadow home and robbed them Monday evening.

Alan Barnett, 91, and his 87-year-old wife Rita were enjoying a summer afternoon when Rita couldn't remember if she locked the back door.

As she approached the door to check if it was locked, she saw a man standing on the deck.

She told him to go away, but instead he pushed his way inside.

"He was out to get money," Rita said about the man. "He was shouting, dinero, dinero."

Meanwhile, her husband heard the commotion from the living room and got up to see what was happening. That's when the intruder allegedly threw both of them to the kitchen floor.

He then grabbed a large meat fork and held it Rita's throat.

"I said I'll give you all the money you want," Rita recalled. " I really thought I'd be dead, because no one was here."

Rita began to lead the man to her bedroom where she kept some loose cash. Alan then tried to make his move, pushing the intruder into the bathroom.

"I tried to get him with my cane," said Alan. "But, he was just too much for me."

The man made off with about $100 in cash, jewelry and credit cards.

He is described as being in his 20s and clean shaven.

Rita and Alan were bruised and shaken, saying they just want this man caught.

Nassau County police canvassed the area looking for the man, but came up empty.

Detectives ask anyone with information to call Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
