GREENPOINT, Brooklyn — A woman standing outside her car early Monday morning on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway was killed when she was struck by an oncoming car and fell to the street below the highway, police said.
The crash happened around 2:50 a.m. Monday on the westbound BQE in Greenpoint, Brooklyn near Apollo Street.
Police say the woman had stopped her Chevy in the left lane of the highway and exited the car to deal with a flat tire. While she examined the Chevy — along with occupants of a Toyota who stopped to help — a passing BMW hit the Chevy, which then hit the woman and caused her to fall over the barrier to Meeker Avenue, the street below.
The woman has been identified as 49-year-old Aissatou Diallo, a Staten Island resident. She was taken to an area hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Police say the driver of the BMW, 43-year-old Vladimir Menin was hospitalized for minor injuries.
He was arrested and charged with manslaughter; aggravated vehicular homicide; driving while intoxicated; reckless driving and driving without a license.
Occupants of the Chevy and Toyota were also taken to the hospital for evaluation.
Traffic was heavily affected in the area Monday morning and was backed up throughout the day with residual delays.
