BAYONNE, N.J. – A driver who failed to stop at the Hudson Bay Extension rear-ended a car, sparking a larger collision with four other vehicles and killing a 5-year-old child, state police said.
The five car crash happened on the westbound Hudson Bay Extension of New Jersey State Turnpike at about 7:20 a.m.
Police say the driver of a Chevy Silverado failed to see if cars were slowing at a stop ahead of him. The Chevy struck the car in front, which was carrying the child.
A subsequent collision of three cars occurred.
Authorities say the victims were taken to Jersey City Hospital where the 5-year-old died.
There are active travel delays.
It was not immediately clear if charges would be filed.
