Woman, 78, dead after BMW being pursued by NYPD crashes into several cars in Queens

CAMBRIA HEIGHTS, Queens -- A 78-year-old woman is dead after a BMW being pursued by police in Queens crashed into two vehicles in Queens Thursday afternoon.

The crash happened around 12:49 p.m. at the intersection of 225th Street and Linden Boulevard.

Police responded to a robbery in progress at 216-19 Hempstead Avenue when a pursuit involving lights and sirens ensued. As they attempted to pull over the BMW at 116th Avenue and 225th Street, the driver rams the unmarked police car, drives through a red light and slams into a 2004 Saturn at a high rate of speed.

The driver of the Saturn, a 78-year-old woman, was pronounced dead on the scene.

Video captured by a bystander shows police swarming the vehicle and handcuffing the suspect.

Police say the 51-year-old man is on "lifetime parole for murder" and has several prior offenses.

The identities of the victim and suspect have not been released.
