THE BRONX – Police are hunting for a man who followed a woman off her elevator and allegedly tried to rape her Wednesday night.

The NYPD said the 33-year-old victim, who lives in the vicinity of East 162nd Street and Sheraton Avenue, was followed by an unknown man into the apartment elevator at about 10:15 p.m. As the elevator ascended, the stranger began to engage her in a conversation, according to police.

When she left the elevator and attempted to unlock her door, he approached her from behind with his pants down and grabbed her buttocks, police said. He then tried to pulled the victim away from the door but the man ran away when another person came to the door, police said.

The suspect is described to be about 5 feet 8 inches tall. He was last seen wearing a striped hooded-sweatshirt and grey sweatpants. Police released surveillance video in hopes of identifying him.
