WEST BRIGHTON, Staten Island — An NYPD lieutenant helped thwart a burglary in a Staten Island home Thursday afternoon.

Police say Lieutenant Matthew Harrison was on patrol around noon when he was alerted to a burglary in process in a house on Castleton Avenue in the West Brighton section of the borough.

When Harrison arrived at the scene, he was flagged down by a woman who said an unknown man had climbed through her window and was in her home.

The lieutenant witnessed the suspect trying to escape from the bathroom window. When the suspect saw Harrison, he retreated back into the home and tried to flee from the front door.

After a brief foot pursuit, the suspect, Edward Hunter, 44, was taken into custody.

The Jersey City man was arrested and charged with burglary.
