MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – A 32-year-old man has pleaded guilty to beating and shaking his girlfriend’s young daughter to death after initially saying she fell off the bed.
Acting Westchester County District Attorney James McCarthy announced Carlton Brown, of the Bronx, pleaded guilty for one count of manslaughter on Thursday for the 2014 death of 2-year-old Kali Mack.
Brown admitted in court to hitting Mack and forcibly shaking her body, causing her to sustain abusive injuries, retinal hemorrhages that led to her death, according to prosecutors.
On August 31, 2014, Brown, who was living with the child’s mother at the time in Mount Vernon, called 911 indicating Mack was in distress and told first responders that her injuries were as a result of her falling off a bed. The toddler was transported to a local hospital, where she died three days later.
The medical examiner ruled her cause of death was abusive head trauma and the manner of death was a homicide.
Extensive evidence compiled by Mount Vernon Police Department led to the arrest of Brown on July of 2015.
The child’s mother was not involved in her death, LoHud reports.
Brown’s sentencing date is on July 28, 2016. He could face a maximum sentence of 25 years in state prison.
