Phoenix, AZ (KPHO) — Silent Witness is asking for the public’s help to track down a man who took two cats from their enclosure at a boarding facility and physically abused them until they died.
Police said the suspect cut a hole in the outside cat enclosure at Planet Petopia near 13th Avenue and Hatcher Road in Phoenix and removed two cats shortly before 4 a.m. on March 4.
Police said he killed the cats, threw them into a dumpster and walked away.
When the staff discovered that the cats were missing, “We started looking around out here and found quite a bit of blood and then we looked in the trash can and found their bodies in the trash can,” Owner Gus Erickson said.
The incident was caught on surveillance video, however, the suspect covered his face with his hand. Erickson said it looked like the suspect was either beating or stabbing the cats.
“He took them out through a wall that you can barely get your hand through and he reached in there with a little noose and put it around the cats’ necks and then drug them through, leaving just a mess,” Erickson said. “So the cats were pretty much hurt before they got outside. So the guy is really sick, really, really sick.”
Planet Petopia is a pet boarding and grooming business. The cats belonged to a Tucson man who was boarding them at the facility.
“You hear a story like this and it’s one of those like pit in your stomach, you feel so sick knowing, too, that these are somebody’s beloved pets and us being right next door, that could’ve easily been us,” said Arizona Humane Society spokeswoman Bretta Nelson. “Our hearts go out to the family and of course to Petopia.”
“The guy needs to be taken off the street no matter what, in any way possible,” Erickson said.
