RIPLEY, N.Y. –– Emergency response officials are working to contain a chemical leak after a train derailed in a Chautauqua County town late Tuesday night.
Authorities said at approximately 11:20 p.m., 15 train cars traveling on the Norfolk Southern Line derailed near the town of Ripley. Three rail cars carrying hazardous liquids, including ethanol were turned on their side, and one is confirmed to be leaking.
There are no reported injuries or fires at this time.
Governor Cuomo said in a statement overnight several homes in the immediate vicinity and other nearby residents were evacuated. He called on several state and local departments to contain the spill and assist hazmat teams.
“We will continue to respond to the situation as it develops and take all necessary actions to keep people safe,” Cuomo said.
