MIDDLE ISLAND, N.Y. — Police are investigating the apparent murder-suicide of a woman and her husband at their Long Island home.

Police say officers were responding to a 911 for a welfare check at the home on Summersweet Drive in Middle Island at about 8:45 p.m. Sunday when they noticed a gas leak.

Once the home was ventilated, police say they found 54-year-old Fahriye Ugan dead and her husband, 41-year-old Erdem Gulay, injured with stab wounds. The husband was hospitalized and later died. Police believe he stabbed himself.

Police say the woman’s injuries did not appear to have been self-inflicted. The medical examiner will determine the exact cause of death.

The investigating is continuing.
