The votes are in! Which school will PIX11 fuel? Watch the PIX11 Morning News this Friday!

Here are some of the students from Hillcrest High School in Jamaica, Queens! This school has a wickedly talented drum-line, as well as a huge student body — 3,400 students in all! But, even with the enthusiasm, the college office only has six computers for their 700+ senior-year students to apply to college.

And here are some of the amazing kids from Bronx Envision Academy, in West Farms, Bronx. Lots of great student initiatives and extracurricular activities, including the Elite Productions student-run deejay club! If this school wins our “Fuel My School” high school campaign, principal Emily Shu says she’ll let the student body decide how to spend the money.

To quote one of the students we met, photographer Kelsey Pelaez, “This school should win because if you look around, our hearts might look the same, but in reality we are still different. Our talents make our hearts look and feel different, and that’s the key. All students and teachers provide exceptional love, which warms all. The students should have that memory from high school where they say and can relive the moment where they were themselves and they made a change.”

More to come this Friday!

Friday, March 11, 2016:

We're off to the races in Brooklyn today!

Our second stop? East New York. Our team met with an sweet second grade class and walked through the colorful  "Success Garden."

For a school with more than 30 percent of students living in transition housing, teachers work their hardest to create a nurturing environment for students in need. In fact, the food they grow in this very garden goes right back to the community, including the families of the kids at the school.

Other great work includes:

  • Buying daily basic school supplies, backpacks, books, and even clothing for students that can't afford it
  • Teaching students about healthy living choices, sustainable food, consumption of waste, and energy

Watch the PIX11 Morning News on Monday to learn more about our second finalist!

Fuel My School

Learning & growing with Finalist #2!

Thursday, March 10, 2016:

Today, we made our first stop to an elementary school in Staten Island. Dan Mannarino met with first grade students, teachers, and the principal, learning all about the remarkable ways that this school is making a difference to both: their students and greater community.

Some of their amazing initiatives include:

  • Putting together "turkey baskets" for families that can't afford a Thanksgiving meal
  • Sharing backpacks filled with school supplies for students at the start of the school year
  • Getting every student a holiday gift so that they have something to open during the winter holidays
  • Providing reading glasses for students that need them

Tune in to the PIX11 Morning News on Monday to learn more about our first finalist!
