MELROSE, The Bronx — Two NYPD officers are recovering after being injured in a shooting in a South Bronx public housing complex.

Diara Cruz, 24, and Patrick Espeut, 29, are now in stable condition after being transported to Lincoln Hospital Thursday night.

At 8 p.m. Thursday at the Melrose Houses, three officers encountered two people in a stairwell on the sixth floor.

One of the suspects pulled out a gun and started to fire at the officers. Espeut was shot in the face, and Cruz was shot in the abdomen. The third officer was unharmed.

The suspect who shot ran into an apartment on seventh floor.

The officers found the suspect inside the apartment with an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound. A handgun and shotgun were both recovered at the apartment.

The accomplice who officers saw in the stairwell remains unidentified. He has been arrested but has not been charged. The other people in apartment are also being questioned.
