CHESAPEAKE, Va. — A woman has been sentenced to 18 years in prison after authorities say she shot and killed her mother and then sent a picture of the body to her father's phone.
The Virginian-Pilot reports that Rachel Hutson was sentenced in Chesapeake Circuit Court on Tuesday. She had pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and use of a firearm in a felony in June.
According to court documents, Hutson called her father and said she had shot her 58-year-old mother in 2013 at the family's home. She then sent a photo of her mother's body to her father's cellphone.
Hutson testified that she had been a caregiver for her seriously ill mother. She said she had planned to kill herself before killing her mother but didn't want her mother to find her body.
