GARDEN CITY, N.Y. — A large portion of Christmas celebrators stomp in protest when decorations in green, red and gold come out of hiding before the Halloween candy binge has even begun. But, shoppers at Roosevelt Field in Garden City were shocked to find the Santa Claus photo display missing all the traditional trappings associated with the holiday season.

A photo posted online by a local family shows what looks like a futuristic-looking staging area rather than Santa's typical setting in the North Pole. It involves faux sparkling glaciers, interactive screens and a wintry light show every 30 minutes.

The family told News 12 that they usually have Christmas photos taken at Roosevelt Field, but they'll be going elsewhere this year.

Mall management will be adding a Christmas tree to the display after public backlash, Newsday reported.

Other Simon malls around the country have rolled our similar settings, seven in total. Simon is calling it the "glacier Santa experience," according to the Charlotte Observer.

A petition on change.org petition  has garnered more than 14,000 signatures demanding Simon malls to bringing back the traditional Christmas Tree, using the hash tag #BringBacktheTree.
