LOS ANGELES — Director Wes Craven is dead at 76.

Deadline reports Craven, who was known for the horror classic “A Nightmare on Elm Street” died Sunday after a long battle with brain cancer, his family announced.

Craven’s Freddy Krueger character had thousands of people afraid to fall asleep.

The director claimed he got the idea for the Elm Street franchise while living next to a cemetery in Cleveland, according to Hollywood Reporter.
