LA PLATA, Md. (PIX11) -- The grieving father of a 3-year-old boy found dead on a swing says the boy's mother was not fit to take care of their son.

Ji'Aire Lee, 3, was found dead in a La Plata, Maryland park last week with his mother. Police say the mother had been pushing him on the swing for hours before they arrived. The mother may have been there overnight.

The 3-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. His 24-year-old mother was taken to a hospital for a psychological evaluation.

On Monday, Ji'Aire's father James Lee spoke to the media about his son's death.

Lee told FOX DC he went to court last month to ask for custody of Ji'Aire. He believed that having Ji'Aire in his care would be the best thing for the boy.

"I'm not saying she is an unfit parent, but at this particular time, she wasn't fit to take care of our son," Lee told FOX DC.

The day in court was the last time Lee saw his son.

Lee said he was supposed to pick up Ji'Aire on Saturday but couldn't reach the mother.

"She stopped answering my calls," Lee said. "Friday morning on the way to work, her mother calls me up and says my son is gone."

A spokesperson for the Charles County Sheriff's Office said an autopsy had been performed, but the cause of death remains under investigation.  Police are still working to piece together the sequence of events leading up to the boy's death. Ji'Aire's body had no sign of trauma.

A GoFundMe account has been set up to help the family pay for Ji'Aire's funeral. As of Tuesday afternoon, the fundraiser had 216 donators and $5,861 of the $8,000 needed.
