NEW JERSEY (PIX11) – Gone are the days of swimmers fearing the lurking shadow of death, now they can track it online — great white Mary Lee has her own Twitter account, thousands of followers and a radar charting her every move up the East Coast.

On Thursday, the 16-foot, 3,456-pound adult shark was spotted 10 miles off the Wildwood, New Jersey coastline.  Mary Lee’s celebrity Twitter following shot past 15,000 Friday morning, and the Mary Lee Facebook page is closing in on 50,000 likes.

Ocearch, a non-profit group that tracks great whites and other large predators, is monitoring Mary Lee’s movement, health and biology.  They first tagged her in Cape Cod three years ago, was named after expedition leader Chris Fischer’s mother.

“My parents have done so much. I was waiting and waiting for a special shark to name after her and this is truly the most historic and legendary fish I have ever been a part of and it set the tone for Cape Cod,” Fischer said.
