MANHATTAN (PIX11) — A chronic transit trespasser was busted doing more than jumping a turnstile in Times Square, police said Wednesday as they released a photo of a gun found in the suspect’s underwear.
Dashawn Hines, 23, was arrested shortly before 7 p.m. Tuesday by officers Kristopher Charubin and Andrew Marino. Marino was training Charubin, on the force for eight months.
The officers were standing beyond the turnstiles in the mezzanine area at the Times Square station, near the N-Q-R line, when they spotted a man approach the subway entryway then fall back. The man paced back and forth for several minutes before he allegedly leapt over the turnstile without paying fare.
That’s when he was met with Charubin and Marino. Police said a check of Hines’ name revealed he’s been arrested in the transit system before and was not eligible to receive a summons.
As he was being arrested and searched, the officers found a .38 Derringer loaded with two bullets hidden in Hines’ underwear, police said. He faces charges of criminal possession of a weapon, theft of service and criminal trespass.
