NEW YORK (PIX11) -- First came the book, which turned up the heat and made silk ties an accessory .. for sex. Now, the movie version of "Fifty Shades of Grey" is whipping up even more excitement.

The movie trailer may look pretty steamy, but many fans say they are not as graphic as the scenes in the book.

Because of "Fifty Shades," BDSM has become a part of mainstream vernacular. BDSM stands for bondage/discipline, domination/submission, sadism/masochism.

After the book was released in 2011, sex toys began to fly off the shelves. With the movie set to release Friday, it's happening again. Even in Target.

Target is selling official "Fifty Shades of Grey" sex gear,  including the vibrating love ring, meant to be worn by men. Sex shops are also seeing a rise in sales on vibrators, restraints, including silk ties, handcuffs and blindfolds.

Target isn't the only place benefiting from the movie. The steamy story has spawned an Off-Broadway musical that spoofs the book and has played to jam-packed audiences since March 2014.

PIX11 talked to sex therapist Sari Cooper for some insight on the recent phenomenon.

You have to wonder -- if Target is selling blindfolds and vibrating sex rings, is this desire going to become so commonplace that no one is going to blink a eye?

The movie comes out on Friday, Feb. 13.
