Live storm updates: NYC public schools will be open Wednesday

NEW YORK (PIX11) — A powerful winter storm battered the tri-state area, dumping up to 2 feet of snow in the hardest hit places, including eastern Long Island. The city and points north and west were spared blizzard conditions, but still received snow.

By early Tuesday, the blizzard warning had been lifted for New York City and New Jersey but remained in effect for eastern Long Island and much of Connecticut.

Strong gusty winds up to 30 mph are possible in some areas and the Weather Service says whiteout conditions could make travel extremely dangerous.

 No Broadway shows tonight:

As a
result of the travel restrictions put in place by government authorities and
additional safety precautions implemented due to severe weather, all Broadway
performances tonight will be cancelled.

 Charlotte
St. Martin, Executive Director of The Broadway League, stated, “Now that the
storm has arrived, I’d like to reiterate that the safety and security of
theatregoers and employees is everyone’s primary concern. As a result of
the 11:00pm travel ban and other travel restrictions and safety precautions
implemented by government authorities on behalf of the winter storm, evening
performances will be cancelled tonight.  We will send out an official
notice with information about tomorrow’s performances as soon as possible, or
no later than 6:00pm today.”

 For information about exchanges,
theatregoers should contact their point of purchase. Check
Broadway.org for
updates.

From City of Bayonne, NJ spokesperson :
Plowing & Salting
A coating of salt has and/or is currently being laid on City Roadways. The City recently received a sizeable delivery of salt, and has ample reserves for this winter weather event. As snow begins to accumulate, at least 35 plows will be deployed throughout the City.
Parking Restrictions
Broadway:
The Broadway Central Business District, both sides of 19th Street to 31st Street, has been posted as “No Parking” for the duration of the storm. This will allow curb-to-curb plowing in this area.
The entire length of the East Side of Broadway has been posted as “No Parking.” This will significantly aid in post-storm snow removal operations throughout the Broadway corridor.
Kennedy Boulevard:
The entire length of the East Side (North-Bound) of Kennedy Boulevard will be posted as “No Parking.” The County will plow to the curb on the East Side of the Boulevard; this action will assist in post-storm snow removal operations.
Parking Allowances
Meters have been suspended for on-street and central lot parking. Residents without off-street
parking arrangements are encouraged to park municipal lots to keep vehicles off of roadways. This
will aid in plowing and subsequent snow removal.

After the School District plows, school yards will be opened to the public for parking. This will
assist in easing the need for parking during snow removal operations. The Superintendent has
announced that all District facilities will be closed tomorrow, Tuesday, January 27th.
Warming Centers
Warming Centers will be open at the 56th Street Senior Center and the 27th Street Community
Center for those in need of relief from the storm. The 27th Street location will be open overnight
tonight and throughout the day tomorrow. Upon closing, anyone sheltering at the 56th Street
location will be transported to the Community Center at 27th Street.
Emergency Shelter
In the event the community is in need of an emergency shelter warming centers will be of first use.
If there is a need for additional space or an expansion to sheltering operations a mutual agreement
exists with the School District for use of Oresko School.
Garbage & Recycling
In speaking with our contractor(s), garbage and recycling pickup will be suspended on Tuesday
and Wednesday throughout the City. Residents are asked to NOT place receptacles curbside.
Regular pickups will resume on Thursday (1/29/15).
City Operations
City Hall will be closed tomorrow, Tuesday, January 27th. The Library will also be closed during
this time. All personnel essential to operations during this weather emergency shall report as
directed by their supervisor.
Bayonne Municipal Court was closed as of 12:30pm today. Both day and evening court sessions
scheduled for Tuesday, January 27th have been canceled.
