UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, The Bronx (PIX11) -- A row of stores in the Bronx was on the verge of being gutted Wednesday morning as flames ripped through a plaza.

The fire was first reported about 5:30 a.m. and within two hours grew to demand four alarms from crews, officials said.

Flames tore through multiple businesses -- including a grocery store and 99-cent store -- in a single-story building at 1959 University Ave., near West Burnside Avenue, fire officials said.

The city's Office of Emergency Management said at least one firefighter suffered minor injuries but did not reveal what type of injuries.

With so many businesses damaged, the fire undoubtedly will leave dozens without a job just as the holidays begin.
