BOHEMIA, New York (PIX11) – Officers arrested a man for driving while intoxicated after his car slammed into another vehicle early Sunday, seriously injuring one of the people inside, police said.

James Hober, 59, was not hurt when his 1999 Volkswagen slammed into the back of a 2005 Chevrolet minivan just after 2 a.m.

The van, driven by Richard Mascia, 51, of Holbrook, flew into the guardrail and overturned.  Mascia suffered minor injuries, but his passenger, 49-year-old JoAnne Barbato, of Centereach, suffered serious injuries to the head, chest and arm.  Both were taken to Southside Hospital for treatment.

Hober will be arraigned Sunday at First District Court in Central Islip on charges of driving while intoxicated.
