TOMPKINSVILLE, Staten Island (PIX11) -- The family and friends of Eric Garner gathered Saturday to honor what would have been Eric's 44th birthday.
"This time last year we were sitting down at Applebee's for his birthday," Garner's widow Esaw told a crowd at the National Action Network's local chapter. "This year all I could do is talk to the sky and hope that he hears me."
Around 100 people gathered at Victory Blvd. and Bay St., where Garner died of a police chokehold, to commemorate his birthday.
Several attendants wore shirts with Garner's face in a heart that read "sleep in peace."
