LOWER EAST SIDE (PIX11) -- Police are looking for a phoney landlord they say scammed a man out of thousands of dollars for an apartment that was never actually for rent.

Cops say the 36-year-old victim was looking for an apartment on Craigslist when he came across an ad for an apartment at 178 Ludlow Street. The suspect showed the man the apartment on August 17, and the victim gave him $4,400.

When the would-be tenant tried to move into the apartment, he discovered the apartment was already occupied and the man he gave money to was not the apartment owner nor a representative of the owner.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
