QUAD CITIES, Iowa (WQAD) – Miguel Rosas has been rewarded with free Kentucky Fried Chicken for the rest of his life.
The Rock Island native recently shaved and painted the renowned Colonel Sanders logo in the back of his client’s head. Later that day, Rosas said he and his client went to KFC.
“When we went inside everybody pretty much just stopped working,” Rosas said, while shaving a flame design into a client’s head. “All the employees came up to us and started taking pictures of the design.”
That same night, Rosas received a call from a district manager for KFC who said he wanted to see the design in person. The next day Rosas showed the manager his work.
“He told me that they wanted to possibly get my work on the KFC website and possibly use it on a commercial,” Rosas said.
Rosas added that the men then proceeded to give him a stack of free KFC meals.
“He told me when I run out to call him and he would get me more,” Rosas laughed.
Rosas said he began cutting hair when he was 13 years old. He started cutting his own hair and then began doing his friends’ hair. While he attended Rock Island High School, Rosas attended barber college.
Rosas opened The New Style Barber Shop in 2007. There are eight barbers that work at the shop now, according to Rosas.
While Rosas has always loved to cut hair, he said he began doing designs and competitions in 2011. He said he likes to cut designs because it blends his passion for cutting hair and art.
“It’s an art because when somebody comes in, they are coming in with their hair all grown out. You’re turning nothing into something,” Rosas said.
Since competing, Rosas has traveled to Las Vegas, Dallas, Chicago, New York and Atlanta to compete in competitions. He’s received 19 trophies, 12 of them are first place.
The young barber has completed dozens of desings: Steve Jobs, Mrs. Doubtfire, Lebron James, Alf, Kermit the Frog, Mickey Mouse and Kanye West to name just a few.
“I never thought barbering would bring me this far,” Rosas said while he finished a haircut.
Rosas said he hopes to expand his business and one day open a barber school.
