Police in the Bronx shoot man as he assaults woman with knife

THE BRONX (PIX11) -- Officers shot a 34-year-old man in the Bronx as he was assaulting a woman with a knife early Sunday morning.

Police responded to 911 calls at 2741 Sedgwick Ave. in Marble Hill around 3:51 a.m. when they found the man assaulting the 32-year-old victim in a stairwell. The officers ordered the suspect to drop the weapon, but he refused and continued to assault her. Each officer then fired their gun once, shooting the man in the torso.

The knife is described as an 8-inch blade and was recovered at the scene between the second-floor landing and the lobby.

The woman was transported to Saint Barnabus Hospital in stable condition. The suspect was also transported to Saint Barnabus, where he remains in police custody in stable condition.

The officers were transported to Allan Pavilion, where they were treated for tinnitus, or ringing of the ears. No other injuries were reported.
