YONKERS, N.Y. (AP/PIX11) — A Yonkers police captain will be a guest at the wedding of a baby whose life he saved more than 20 years ago.

The Journal News reports that Capt. Joseph Barca will attend the Aug. 17 wedding of Shammarah Hamideh outside Chicago.

It was Dec. 28, 1993 when Barca responded to a call about a baby not breathing.

According to the Yonkers Police Department Facebook page, then-Sgt. Barca was the first to arrive on the scene on Linden Street.

Barca took the 2-month-old from her distraught father and performed resuscitation. He hit her back until the obstruction flew out. By the time the baby got to the hospital she was breathing on her own.

Hamideh made a full recovery and has maintained a close relationship with Barca over the years.

A recent nursing school graduate, Hamideh is getting married later this month to truck driver Mohammed Salah.

She says Barca sends her a birthday card every year and treats her like his own daughter.

Barca will celebrate 45 years of service with the Yonkers Police Department in September.
