NEW YORK (PIX11) -- The wife of a man who captured the arrest and subsequent in-custody death of a Staten Island father has been arrested on suspicion of assault, police said Wednesday.

Chrissie Ortiz was taken into custody Tuesday after she allegedly attacked a 35-year-old woman outside a store on Bay Street in Staten Island, NYPD said.

The victim was taken to a hospital with bruising and swelling to her face. She was treated and released, police said.

In her first sit-down interview, Ortiz spoke to PIX11 News Wednesday saying she believes police are targeting her family after her husband’s video sparked citywide outrage over officers’ behavior, especially when it comes to the long-prohibited use of a chokehold.

Her husband, 22-year-old Ramsey Orta, was arrested last weekend on a weapons charge. He has said he believes that police targeted him and set him up, saying he’s been followed by officers.

His wife echoed those suspicions to PIX11 News. She said her husband’s recording was spurred by experiences he had with NYPD officers who allegedly “take advantage” of citizens in their Staten Island neighborhood.

Orta is the bystander who shot footage of Eric Garner’s July 17 arrest in which the 43-year-old father was put in a chokehold by an NYPD officer.

During the arrest, Garner could be heard repeating, “I can’t breathe.” Minutes later, he was dead.

The medical examiner ruled Garner’s death a homicide.

Four EMS workers who responded to the scene but apparently did not try to resuscitate Garner were suspended without pay. An investigation is ongoing into the police officers who took Garner into custody, one of whom has been stripped of his gun and his badge.

Garner was stopped for allegedly selling untaxed cigarettes, or loosies.

Good job on that interview Suki, why didn’t you ask her about her assault arrest? Then letting her beg for bail money for her POS husband, classic.

    • Chrissie

First of all i wasnt begging. Second she did ask abou . My case but i cnt comment for legal reasons. My case is no one concern a man is falsley accused another dead and your worried about my business im here to be my husbands voice.

  • v leo

so let me get this straight your a carrer criminal carrying a pistol and the police aremtargeting you? you decide to attack a woman in the middle of the street and the police are targeting you? WHAT WARPED ASND TWISTED reality do these morons live in?

    • Chrissie

No one attacked just an iinnocent woman. He wasn’t carrying a pistol. Get ur facts straight before you open ur mouth because now you sound like a moron. The gun was found conveniently on a cops daughter

      • Jose

He wasn’t carrying a gun??? He was a law abiding citizen, me thinks not. You don’t obey The laws of the land you fall on your face. Stop committing and this won’t happen.

  • Michelle

Let me understand this so you mean to tell me if this man never shot the video of this man getting killed by the nypd he would be on the news no they only have him on the news is because he shot the video of the police killing this man that didn’t do anything in this video for the police to kill him why this officer isn’t in jail yet why. He’s not on the news for murder why because his family not going to have daddy around well news flash Eric isn’t here to be with his kids so f the police

    • Chrissie

I agree michelle you have more sense then the other two comments. They are trying to have this cop away with his murder. My man background is in question why? ? Thhe video says it all. But wait lets speak of this cops background everyone seems to have forgotten. What planet are they living on.

  • Joey

The Police did set out that day to kill anyone. He was selling cigarettes on the street. That may sound silly to you, but you can’t do that. It’s New York law. The police didn’t make that law, just enforce it. He decided that the cops would not arrests him. He chose to resist. Unfortunatly he died while resisting arrest. It is a shame, but he chose. And your husband ain’t no Angel. Hard to belive his arrests are all mistakes. Seems he has trouble bieng a good person.

    • NYPD are Racist

Here’s a little surprise for you. You can’t choke people to death for committing a crime. That may seem alright to you, somebody who’s ok with government/police oppression but to the majority of us that is an outrage and will not be accepted as “just force”.

      • Moe

A choke hold is not against the law it’s simple a tactic that is prohibed by the NYPD. In the video what you see is not a “choke hold”. Keep watching the video a million times over, the facts won’t change. You can’t resist arrest and expect the cops to just walk away. Minimal Physical force was used to bring a 350lb man down and he did not die on the scene he died on the way to the hospital. Another thing you cannot give CPR to a person who has a pulse. Everyone wants to see a cop go to jail who is out there putting his life on the line protecting us from criminals, making sure we can walk to the grocery store without being harassed by mopes on the corner, from gangsters walking around with weapons etc… How about we look at how things were back in the 80s compared to today. This is a new generation and I pray things change for the better soon because I don’t want NYC to become like Chicago. So open your eyes people. Why are we praising a criminal like Ramsey? This kid is 22 years old with 27 arrests? His “wife” is defending her “husband” when he’s out on a drug corner with a 17 year old female? This is ridiculous. We need the 3 strick law like California and put these harden criminals in jail for good.

      • ANNOYED WITH ALL THE HATE

Moe, if the chokehold is “prohibited” by the NYPD, then why was it used by the NYPD? Resisting arrest is wrong, this is true, but the use of the chokehold murder that man. Bottom line. You say he died on the way to the hospital – how sure are you of that? I saw the video and unfortunately have seen many pulseless people in my profession. I find difficulty in believing that man had a pulse, especially after seeing how many times and how many arteries were checked by police and EMT’s trying to confirm a pulse. I believe no CPR/ACLS was not started in fear of the crowd and what their retaliation may be to actually witnessing a murder. I also pray for a change because things have definitely become extremely crazy as far as the police and which ones are truly out there to serve and protect and which ones abuse their positions. People also need to have more respect for the police – you cannot treat all one way based on the actions of a few. As far as this guy being targeted – I doubt it. It would appear that he bought more attention to himself than he should have based on his criminal past. The video was needed to help seek the truth, but in doing so, he should be walking the straightest line possible.

    • MrsNickels

The cops didn’t have a reason to arrest him(Eric). They didn’t SEE him selling cigarettes. They said someone SAID he sold them a cigarette (right?)…Why didn’t they just search the man? Why were they arresting him? Also she didnt say that her husband didnt do ANY other the alleged crimes. what she said was he didn’t do ALL of what he was accused of doing.

    • Jose

Joey, you are 100% , they will never get it! low education! generational welfare recipients . I own a business and I agree with the cops. The law is the law no matter how small, you act like a derelict you will be treated like one. Follow directions instead of fighting directions. Behave like a human being. Get educated , find a good role model not a rapper. Finish school , educate your children and learn American Values.

  • NYPD are Racist

Keep on spreading the word of these corrupt cops. I even see idiots in the comment section that see no problem with police exculpating people who commit crimes, maybe they should have their lives ended too when they run a red light or smoke a joint after work. Probably the same people who say they’re small government but see no problem with a militarized police force waging an unjust drug war that hurts minorities the most. But if you mess with some rancher who’s breaking the law and not paying his fair share than they’ll rise up and be upset. A bunch of push overs really.

Chrissie Ortiz did an excellent job of calmly presenting the facts and insisting on the core truth: what we see in the video

  • Moe

    • MrsNickels

So Moe, what is it that YOU see in the video? Even after the man was brought down he held on…..also who is praising Ramsey?? okay he’s 22 with 27 arrest…you don’t know what those “misdemeanors” were for…could have been loitering, Disorderly conduct (a simple argument can cause that), public intoxication etc. not saying that those are acceptable however there is no HARM being caused…again we need to stop looking at a person’s past to judge them…people change (not saying that’s the case..because I don’t know and neither do YOU…also …who said that he was on the corner with a 17year old girl? some news report said they were leaving a hotel, some stated they were walking by..but you say they were standing on a corner…okay if that was true….whats wrong with that? obviously he knows the girl….they couldnt be having a conversation? everyone is coming up with their own assumptions but not looking at ALL possibilities just assume the worse because of this man’s past that we truthfully know NOTHING about right?

    • Jose

Moe your wasting your time, most of the people here are perps/low class citizens who want the police to be weak for they can continue to commit their crime. A society who hates police are a society of derelicts. The police should only protect the working class and some poor who are law abiding citizens. Maybe the govt should build a city for these perps to kill themselves, I mean police themselves. Let The gang bangers be their police officers. They hate the police , society should give them what they want. Make them their own county and board it up for they won’t be allowed in, give them the third world country they desire.

  • Fed up with the animals

Next time you need help, call a crackhead! The police should just drive around all day and do nothing. They should just let everyone take care of themselves. Let these people who hate cops see what its like to not be able to leave their homes and not get jumped or even killed. Let the criminals run the street. Turn on the TV and see how people are living in Iraq, cause that would be the direction the city would be heading.. I say the police should just go on strike!!!!!!!!!

  • TAX PAYER

THE MEDIA CHOOSES TO ENTERTAIN RETARDS AND MISCRIENTS, PEOPLE WITHOUT JOBS WHO HAVE NOTHING BETTER TO DO BUT TO ATTACK THE HARD WORKING NYC POLICE FORCE. ITS RELLY ASHAME HOW YOU CHOOSE TO GET YOUR RATINGS. SUKI AND CORY WHY DONT YOU GUYS GO GET A NICE APARTMENT IN THAT AREA NEXT TO CHRISSY, IM SURE HER LOVING HUSBAND, DRUG DEALER/PIMP RAMSEY AND HER WILL BE GREAT NEIGHBORS. WHY DONT YOU CONTACT AND INTERVIEW THE YOUNG MEN AND WOMEN WHO LIVE IN THAT AREA AND GET UP EVERY MORNING, GO TO WORK FOR A DECENT LIVING AND HAVE TO BE HARRASED BY THE MISCRIENTS IN THAT AREA LOOKNIG TO MAKE A QUICK BUCK? WHY DONT YOU INTERVIEW THE PEOPLE WHO THERE FAMILY MEMBERS GET KILLED ON A DAILY BASIS ON THE STREETS OF NYC INLUDING THE STREET IN THE MINORITY NEIGHORHOODS BY THERE OWN KIND, MAYBE KILLING EACH OTHER ITS OK? YOU CLOWNS IN THE MEDIA DONT LIVE IN THOSE AREAS BUT YET YOU ALLOW PEOPLE TO ATTACK THE POLICE TRYING TO GIVE THEM A LITTLE BETTER QUALITY OF LIFE, YOU HAVE NO CLUE WHAT POLICE OFFICERS ENDURE ON A DAILY BASIS IN THE NEIGBORHOODS WE PLEDGE TO PROTECT FROM GUYS LIKE ERIC (RIP) AND RAMSEY (ROD IN JAIL).

    • India

At the end of the day if they do go and report from an urban neighborhood where the crime is high and hard working folks work and get harassed they we explain to you and news reporters that police officers on a daily base abuse there power and they don’t trust police officers to keep them self. And this statement is coming from a hard working female that works a 9-5 40 hours a week and lives in an urban neighborhood !! FYI your statement is ignorant!!! And ignorance is bliss

      • Jose

Actually India his comments are 100% true! you are wrong. If people listened ann acted like humans this wouldn’t happen. Act like a animal get treated like one.

  • Tonette123

It is obvious to me that some of the posters do not know about crime, the law, or medicine.
True, you don’t perform CPR if someone has a pulse, but you do administer oxygen to someone who complains that they cannot breathe. That’s basic medicine.
Mr. Gardner is “accused” of selling cigarettes on the street. But in the early part of the video, he claims not to be doing that. At no point have I read that they found any cigarettes on him. Why didn’t they just pat him down and keep moving?
No surprise that Mr. Orta was arrested. I knew his family would be targeted as soon as the video went viral. If he even lets snow collect in front of his home, he will be arrested. Reality. Sad but true. Again, the evidence has not been shown that he placed a gun on anyone.
And the wife is correct: she cannot comment on an ongoing legal issue, e.g., her arrest. No attorney worth 2 cents would let her speak about her arrest in an interview.
Let’s wait and see what happens with this case before judging things in the court of public opinion.

    • India

And keep in mind that the witness says he broke up a fight . And I hear threw out the hole video people yelling “he didn’t do anything he just broke the fight up” at the end if the days police officers don’t care because they know they took an oath to stand by each other judges too..

  • India

I don’t see where he resisting arrest! Once you see the cop put his arms around Eric neck you can see where Eric’s puts his hands up and keep it up until they throw him on the floor. I believe that that lady and his wife gets harassed by the cops!! It’s sad because there suppose to be there to protect and severe but instead there like a gang that terrorise the streets then gets a way with criminal actions. The video is all wrong with handling the situations like it was handle… And it’s sad to say that the cops will get away with it!!! I’m confused at how the EMT workers got suspend with no pay but yet nothing to the cops.. I pray for every one who was affected by the video even the police needs Jesus

Thanx to Chrissie Orta for such a straight up opinion and interview here. The reality is that citizen’s are constantly pigeonholed and harrassed based on class and race, period. You can find just as much cocaine as example being dealt and illegal activities downtown or on Wall St, who comes down on them? … take the same activities goin on over in Brookiyn, up the the Bronx … or in this case Staten Island … it a different response and a high level of disrespect for citizen’s, period. I live in Dallas (in the south) today, but lived in New York (Brooklyn) year’s back, and New York is one of the most classist and racist places I have ever stayed in the nation, and I been all over the nation. Is her husband Ramsey being targeted? … how can you not think that, when NYPD has such a long history (since the late 1960’s I can recall) of targeting as retaliation for those who defy them or question even their action’s.

I am not saying etiher that I think the officer that had a chokehold on Mr. Garner was a racist or intennded to kill him … but the fact is that this officer hasnt been even properly reprimanded during a pending investigation. This all feed’s the fuel to fire which goes back and forth constantly, from police violating peoples right’s to angry citizen’s being defiant toward’s police because of how they are treated as being subhuman. Mrs. Orta (Chrissie) sum’s up the reality clear as it get’s on the condition, especially on the “cop- out- plea deal thing” … thousand’s of young men and women in our nation are rushed through the incarceration and court system’s (which are used for Wall St profiteering too), who ARE NOT really guilty of crimes against people. Same as Mr. Garner was hurting no one, by selling loosies on the street … a “quaity of life crime” crime? …. WTF is that?

    Word Out ….

The bottom line is this, when the police tell you something you do it, there is not ifs ands or butts, it’s yes officer no officer and keep it moving, if that man followed orders would be alive today. Act like a human get treated like one.

  • Joey

Wow..really Work From Home? I should kill myself.. That just shows how ignorant you are. I moved out of the shitty neighborhood i lived in, because I was tired of coming home from work and having to walk pass the guy on the corner selling weed. Also was tired of walking into my building elevator that smelled like piss. So when a guy is selling cigarettes, drinking on the corner, selling weed in the street, and pissing on the sidewalks, it destroys our neighborhood! So go ahead, fight the cops and live like an animal. I might just move back to PR. At least its clean.
