Off-duty MTA officer accidentally shoots 3-year-old son

SMITHTOWN, Long Island (PIX11) -- An off-duty MTA police officer accidentally shot his 3-year-old son in Smithtown, according to Suffolk County police.

The shooting occurred just before 7 p.m. Tuesday night. As of Wednesday evening, no charges against the officer had been filed.

Police said the Officer Jon Gigantiello accidentally discharged his gun. His also injured himself.

Both were taken to the hospital in stable condition. The toddler underwent surgery to remove the bullet.

Gigantiello works in the K-9 unit and has been with the MTA for 11 years.

MTA spokesperson Salvatore Arena released a statement Wednesday regarding the shooting.

“We are aware of the shooting incident involving the off-duty MTA Police Officer, which is being investigated by the Suffolk County Police Department.  The MTA PD Internal Affairs Bureau will investigate once the Suffolk PD completes its inquiry," Arena said.
