NEW YORK (PIX11) -- That factual assessment U.S. Representative Carolyn Maloney made on Thursday is alarming, but dead on. "The troubling part is that we have to be right every second, every time. A terrorist can only be right once and get through our defenses."
Rep. Maloney's comments serve as a reminder that our guards can never be down. However, former FBI agent and NYPD Sgt. Manny Gomez feels that law enforcement's best weapon, the general public, is doing just that, "Absolutely. We've been unfortunately a little more desensitized towards the potential of another terrorist attack simply because we haven't had a terrorist attack here in NYC since 9/11."
Gomez, who runs MG Security Services, does add that the NYPD continues its show of force throughout the city. "As always they are on heightened alert. They have CTOs, Certified Terrorism Officers, on alert with radiation detectors out there."
However, as the city prepares to celebrate the long holiday weekend surrounding our nation's birthday, it is those elsewhere with travel plans to the U.S that according to Representative Maloney are causing great concerns to the TSA and Homeland security. "We know associates of the Al-Qaeda affiliates in Syria, the Al-Nusra front are actively working to create bombs that would be undetectable by existing security measures."
Bombs targeting flights to the U.S from the Middle East, Europe and Africa. Reports indicate that one sinister strategy is to conceal them in smart phones.
Representative Maloney, who sits on the House Subcommittee on National Security and Foreign Affairs, says that recent violence overseas contributes to the concerns that security agencies are dealing with. "It's a tremendous concern the rise of violence in the Middle East and across the world in other areas and we know there have been many attempts to harm America."
