NEW YORK (PIX11/AP) — Authorities are conducting a search on Rikers Island of Correction Officers and inmates for drugs, weapons and contraband.

The Departments of Investigation and Corrections began an unprecedented joint, tactical search of 75 locations in the George Motchan Detention Center.

A statement from the DOC says about a dozen correction officers have already been referred to prosecutors.

A law enforcement official tells The Associated Press the allegations include drug trafficking, inmate assaults, evidence tampering and falsification of records.

Investigators are searching inmate cells, common areas, locker rooms and correction officers as they enter and leave the building.

Additional referrals and arrests are anticipated.
