FAR ROCKAWAY, Queens (PIX11) – A street in the Rockaways is being renamed for a Superstorm Sandy hero.

Dylan Smith heard his neighbors’ screams when their homes caught fire the night of the storm in October of 2012.

So he put on a wetsuit, jumped out the window with his surfboard and paddled towards them to help.

By the end of the night he had saved more than a dozen people.

Tragically, he died two months later while surfing in Puerto Rico.

Now Smith’s neighbors are honoring him by renaming Beach 130th Street and Newport Avenue, “Dylan Smith’s way.”
