JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) — Police have arrested and charged a teenager in the shooting of a 5-year-old innocent bystander in Jersey City.

The 16-year-old on Friday was charged with aggravated assault and weapons charges. His name has not been released because of his age.

Authorities have said the child was shot in the abdomen near the Salem Lafayette housing complex on Wednesday afternoon.

He underwent surgery at Jersey City Medical Center, where a spokesman tells the Jersey Journal the boy is in excellent condition.

It wasn’t clear what sparked the shooting, but neighbors say they saw people running through the streets and heard shots being fired.

During dinner at my friends house last night they were talking about the shooting at the house next door 3 weeks ago.

Since they were being nosy neighbor’s they overheard the resident 20 something saying to the responding officer in charge. “No, I don’t really know those guys” “You don’t know the guys that are always hanging around on the sidewalk in front of your house” “Nah”
