NEW YORK (PIX11) — The Taxi and Limousine Commission will add more green cabs to the outer boroughs.
The Street Hail Livery program launched less than a year ago and now about 5,000 green cabs are working in Upper Manhattan and the other boroughs.
According to a TLC spokesperson, they will issue permits for 6,000 more of these cabs this summer.
Initially, it was thought this would happen in June. But after a City Council hearing Thursday, some thought the Commissioner said this program would be delayed or reduced.
However, Friday night the TLC confirmed the program would expand after they figure out how to make the new fleet as wheelchair accessible as possible.
Permits will likely be issued by August.
