When we found out PIX11 would get the rare chance to check out the brand new 2015 McLaren 650S in an elegant Midtown space offsite from this year’s New York International Auto Show, we knew we were in for something special.
“Behind me sits what happens when a bunch of people who are pedigreed in Formula 1, and in racing want to build a road car,” said company spokesman Hud Giles.
The 650S certainly has the racing heritage, Formula 1 track record, and legitimate super car performance credentials.
Is it pricey?
In a word – yes. Just under three-hundred thousand dollars, for either the hardtop coupe, or the sun-friendly spider.
But that is less than a fourth of the cost of a $1.6-million Koenisegg Agera R.
And just listen to how a reviewer from AutoCar reviewer Steve Sutcliffe compares a Ferrari 458 Italia to the McLaren 650s.
“North of 100 in five and a half seconds. I mean, that’s the sort of performance that will chew up and spit out a 458 Italia without raising a heartbeat. This is an incredible amount of car for the money,” remarked Sutcliffe.
“The usability factor is what keeps them happy. And we’ve seen people driving their cars for enormously more miles than I think for competitive super cars,” said Giles.
Zero to 60 in 2.9 seconds.
Zero to 100 in 5.7 seconds.
The 650S reaches the quarter mile in 10.5 at 135 miles an hour.
From a 3.8-litre twin turbo V-8, delivering a whopping 641-horsepower.
Let’s just say those numbers are mind-blowing.
“If you want the fastest car around the Nuremburg ring, or around Monticello race track, or around Road America, this is the car you want, and this is the car that I will argue will edge out the competition in all those categories,” said Giles.
