I first fell in love with the British Virgin Islands, BVI for short, more than 15 years ago and even though my Travel Therapy goal is to continue to discover new unique places there’s something about the spirit and soul of this part of the Caribbean, known as a sailor’s paradise, that keeps beckoning me back.
When you see the pictures I’ve taken here from my latest trip I think you’ll understand why this is the perfect Travel Therapy vacation escape when you’re looking for an authentic Caribbean experience that’s quiet and peaceful but still a lot of fun!
I started this journey at a new beautiful private island resort called Scrub Island Resort, Spa & Marina, where my lovely one-bedroom suite, with a fully loaded kitchen, designer living room and posh bathroom, overlooked the Caribbean and Scrub Island’s impressive 55 slip Marina.
Highlights here include 52 guest accommodations in addition to luxurious two, three and four bedroom villas, pools with waterfalls and swim up bars, three pristine private beaches and several top-rated restaurants where some of my favorite dishes included the Conch Ceviche, Grilled Island Shrimp and Chocolate themed breakfast. For signature Caribbean cocktails try the Passion of Scrub or a refreshing Cucumber Gimlet or ask bartender Everson to create something special for you.
Scrub Island’s intimate Ixora Spa is another highlight offering inspired treatments, like the Eterno Massage that I loved and even more inspiring views from the spa’s private pool.
Next stop on the this trip was to the island of Jost Van Dyke, home of the legendary Soggy Dollar Bar’s famous Painkiller cocktail, a delicious concoction of juices and three ounces of rum now a favorite throughout the BVI.
Other fun bars not to miss are Foxy’s and Foxy’s Taboo for a laid back Caribbean vibe.
For some of the best views on the island stop by Guavaberry Farm where they offer everything from spa treatments to horseback riding.
Moving on to one of my all time favorite private islands in the Caribbean, Peter Island Resort and Spa, that you can only get to by boat or helicopter, where there are three spectacular villas and fantastic Beachfront Junior Suites that are right on the beach that have these amazing Jacuzzi tubs in the bathrooms where you can hear the waves from the Caribbean while you soak away all your stress. Peter Island has five beaches that are some of the prettiest you’ll find in the entire Caribbean with Little Deadman’s and the ultra private White Bay being my personal favorites.
Peter Island’s award-winning spa also has an impressive Jacuzzi of its own tucked away on the lush hillside overlooking the Caribbean. My favorite experience here is getting a treatment like the Hot Poultice in one of the two private sea view bohios.
Peter Island also offers a long list of other activities from yoga to tennis to water sports, snorkeling and dive trips. One of my favorite activities is hiking the Sunset Loop where the scenery is breathtaking. When you’re ready for a meal Peter Island has some fantastic restaurants from fine dining to on the beach casual. Some of my favorite dishes are the Sautéed Peppered Shrimp with Sweet Potato Gnocchi and the Grilled Certified Angus Beef Tenderloin.
Wine lovers will appreciate Peter Island’s impressive collection. Just ask for Rimple and he’ll find you just what you need and for cocktails bartender Captain will hook you up with delicious drinks like the Peter Island Connection or Island Fruit Daiquiris. Be sure to see below about how you can win five free nights at Peter Island. Cheers to that!
Next on my BVI island hopping agenda was checking out another favorite, Virgin Gorda that’s known for its beautiful Baths where you’ll find excellent snorkeling and picture taking.
While on Virgin Gorda I also stopped by the exquisite Villa Aquamare that I first visited several years ago. This beauty is a celebrity favorite, where A-listers like Harrison Ford and Rihanna have stayed. Some of the photos I took when I first visited were so inspiring they are now featured in my book Travel Therapy: Where Do You Need to Go? so it was fun to go back and visit and see Villa Aquamare is even more stunning now.
Without a doubt I believe one of the best ways to experience the BVI and see as much as you can of the different exquisite islands is to charter a boat whether you do just a day, a week or longer. So I charted with the world-class Virgin Island Sailing and got the incredible 76-foot Zingara Catamaran where Captain Chad and his crew go all out to make sure you have everything you need.
What I love about Zingara is how beautifully designed the entire yacht is and how all five of the bedrooms have their own bathrooms and televisions, although who needs to watch TV when you have such amazing scenery to appreciate in the BVI! The galley is huge, with a full sized Viking stove and there’s even a Jacuzzi on deck. In a word Zingara is luxury personified. I also found out after chartering that Zingara has recently been featured in one of ABC’s Bachelor episodes.
Only a handful of the 60 islands and cays in the BVI are developed so getting out of the water allows you to see so many picturesque islands you wouldn’t normally have access to. Being on a boat also lets you breathe in the exhilarating salt air and gives you a chance to truly appreciate the peaceful beauty of the BVI and that’s what Travel Therapy is all about.
