EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ (PIX11) – The arctic air returns for the next two days to the city. Temperatures tonight will plummet into the lower teens, which is some 30 degrees cooler from our high earlier this afternoon. On Tuesday daytime temperatures will struggle to reach 20 degrees through the afternoon. A coastal system will just slide south and east of the city on Wednesday. There could be a flurry from this; otherwise, it’ll be frigid with a mix of sun and clouds. Highs will be in the upper 20s.
Temperatures moderate through the latter half of the work week. A weak cold front will pass through on Friday giving the chance for a few snow showers. At this point only minor accumulations are possible. Temperatures will climb through the 30s.
All eyes are then on to Super Bowl Weekend and the game itself. Arctic air will retreat north as we head into the weekend making it not as cold as it has been for the last 2-3 weeks. An area of low pressure will slide west to east from the -Ohio Valley and could give us some precipitation from Saturday afternoon into Sunday Morning. A lot of the finer details are not set in stone at this point. We do see this as a storm that is capable of producing a wintry mix. The timing of the start, changeover, & ending, among others, will be determined by the exact track of the low. By kickoff on Sunday night, we will dry out and it will turn chilly.
