Martin Luther King Jr.’s family upset over ‘Freedom 2 Twerk’ fliers
NEW YORK (PIX11) - Enterprising club owners and promoters may have gone too far with the fliers this year, as at least one has the family of Martin Luther King Jr. speaking out.
A Photoshopped flier for a “Freedom 2 Twerk” weekend dance party has the civil rights icon’s daughter speaking out.
“This imagery thing is just appalling, and it’s almost embarrassing,” Dr. King told FOX 5 News. “For me, as his daughter, it’s like ‘wow’, I lost a father who sacrificed everything for them to live a much more dignified and respectful life, and for it to come to this makes me sad.”
While she said she has no problem with people celebrating the memory of her father, she doesn’t think he would have approved of the events capitalizing on his image is advertising.
“My father would have worked to elevate them, to connect with them, and bring them into the movement,” King told FOX 5.
The flier didn’t go over so well with the owner of the Flint dance hall, either.
“I couldn’t believe it, I thought it was a joke,” 41-year-old Victor McEwen told the NY Daily News. McEwen, who owns the Social Network Banquet and Event Center, said he voided a contract with the promotion group. “For (the promoter) to think that this is okay, that this is what we have to stoop to appeal to our youth is completely ridiculous,” McEwen said. “It’s just ignorant.”
Mid-Michigan Teen Parties quickly deleted their Facebook page after outrage over the flier began to spread.
