Woman hit by car while running after her dog

suffolk countySETAUKET (AP) — Police say a Long Island dog owner has been hit by a car and critically hurt while trying to catch her escaped pet on Long Island.

Suffolk County police say the boxer got out of Peggy Place’s yard on Main Street in Setauket around 6:30 a.m. Monday. When the pet ran into the street, she chased after it.

Police say an SUV hit her as she tried to capture the animal.

The 56-year-old Place is hospitalized in critical condition, and her dog is at an animal hospital. The SUV’s 51-year-old driver was unhurt.
