SEE IT: Surfers brave below-freezing temps for perfect Rockaway waves

ROCKAWAY BEACH, Queens (PIX11) – Despite the snow still coating the sand and the bone-chilling temperature, surfers just couldn’t resist the perfect post-storm waves Friday morning.

PIX cameras captured two neoprene-clad diehards paddling out into a frosty surfer’s paradise — perfect, barreling, head-high waves without a single soul riding them — possibly due to the 18-degree air temperature and water temperature in the low 40s.

Hours before, a heavy storm system was swirling over the city, dropping roughly 10 inches of snow as temperatures fell Thursday evening into Friday.

Snow on beach

Evidence of the storm remained on the beach as the fine snow drifted across the sand, blown by the same offshore winds that formed the beautiful, frigid waves.
