TIMES SQUARE (PIX11) - A tight mix of tourists and New Yorkers flocked to Times Square early, eagerly awaiting the ball drop that signaled the New Year.
The celebration was officiated by Bronx native and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who led the crowd at 11:59 p.m. in counting down the 60 seconds to the descent of the iconic crystal ball.
Crowds arrived early Tuesday, and endured light snow flurries as temperatures dipped below freezing during the day.
The entertainment was headlined by Miley Cyrus, and also included performances by Blondie, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and Icona Pop.
Security was tight at the celebration, and earlier in the evening police locked down the nearby Port Authority Bus Terminal after two people were slashed.
The New Year’s celebration was a special one for New York City, as a new mayor was standing outside of his home in Park Slope, Brooklyn, waiting to be sworn in.
The former Public Advocate Bill de Blasio became the city’s 109th mayor in a celebration that began at 12:01 a.m.
